Qld: Vaughan threatens north Qld coast

Residents in north Queensland are preparing for the worst as Cyclone Vaughan gathers
strength on its approach to coastal areas.

The category two cyclone is packing winds of 150km/h and is expected to intensify and
be upgraded to a category three cyclone.

The weather bureau has issued a cycloen warning, which extends from Cape Melville to Townsville.

The storm is located 300km east of Cooktown and is moving west-south-west toward Cairns.

It would be the second cyclone to hit Cairns this year.

Forecaster MATT SAUNDERSON says Vaughan is expected to be more powerful than Cyclone
Steve which devasted Cairns in late February.

It's the third cyclone to threaten north Queensland communities in five weeks - Townsville
was hit by Cyclone Tessi on Monday and Cairns bore the brunt of Cyclone Steve in February.
